Clothes, shoes, toiletries, gear. Keeping everything in your luggage neat and organized throughout your trip can be a challenge. Whether you're using a durable duffel bag for travel or a large checked bag, the right tips can help you efficiently organize your luggage for maximum space. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your capacity.

Use Packing Cubes

In travel packs or a carry on duffel bag, using packing cubes is essential. These compact organizers help manage your bags, allowing you to pack over two weeks' worth of clothing for international trips, or keep all your gear and toiletries organized while traveling with a duffel and a backpack from train to train.

There are a few main ways to use packing cubes for clothes and gear: to organize items by type, to group gear by purpose, or to pack as complete outfits. Compression cubes maximize space, and dedicated clean/dirty laundry cubes keep clean and dirty clothes separate. Gear cubes keep messy gear away from your clothes. Roll clothes tightly to save space.

Bottom to Top

Pack your heavier items, like shoes, gear, and toiletries, near the bottom of your luggage unless it’s a backpack you’re planning to carry for most of the time. If it’s a travel duffel bag with a shoe compartment, pack as many shoes in the compartment as possible, and put the rest at the bottom. Use shoe bags to keep other gear and clothing clean. For wheeled duffels, treat the side with wheels as the bottom. Suitcases and backpacks usually have natural bottoms.

This method keeps heavy items near the wheels to stabilize luggage and prevent crushing lighter clothes. For backpacks, pack heavier items in the middle, close to your back, to balance weight and avoid discomfort while navigating terminals and long treks.

Fill In All the Gaps

Finally, fill in all the little gaps that you might not think about. Put charging cables and bricks inside shoes, fill gaps with socks for even better shock absorption, and use whatever space you can for smaller items. Odds and ends may not fit perfectly in packing cubes, and filling those gaps can help you utilize every bit of space.
