Are you going on a long, epic adventure and need to pack for a couple of weeks of travel? Larger luggage is a great option but a duo may be your best bet. But how do you choose a large checked luggage and a carry-on combo? Do you need wheels, and if so, specific ones? Here are a few tips for choosing the right type of large luggage for your next long trip.

Hard Side or Soft Side?

Whether you're looking for a lightweight carry on luggage with wheels to offset the weight of the contents, plus a large piece of checked luggage, the question of hard-sided versus soft-sided luggage remains. Hard-sided materials like polycarbonate or aluminum protect fragile items but are heavy. Soft-sided options, such as nylon or ballistic polyester, are lighter, flexible, and often have exterior pockets. They offer similar protection, especially when reinforced. Hybrid luggage combines the toughness of hard cases with the flexibility of soft bags, offering protection, organization, and quick access.

Either way, you’ll want luggage that starts at 50 liters for up to two weeks, or 75 to 100 liters for extended expeditions, for your checked luggage.

High Durability

Longer adventures usually require transfers, which test your luggage's durability. Look for heavy-duty lash points, sturdy carrying handles, reliable zippers, and ballistic materials that can endure being dragged, towed, carried, checked, and tossed. Whether on long road trips or international travel in busy cities, the durability of both items is essential.

Wheels for Mobility

A larger carry on size duffel bag can serve you as well on longer trips as your checked piece. They have an advantage over typical duffel bags: wheels. An international carry-on duffel keeps you more mobile, while checked luggage with wheels gives you more space. When choosing larger checked luggage, opt for heavy-duty wheels with reinforced corners for greater durability. Two wheels are good for moving around, though four spinner wheels will give you the most mobility. You should be able to wheel one or both and carry at least one as a backpack or duffel.
